June 2020 Update
Hello Indies!
Hope you are staying healthy and safe! Things are still migrating to the digital space and we have a few exciting events right around the corner.
Recap
IGDA x Core Summer Game Jam has just started, a completely virtual game jam that uses Core to empower developers to make amazing games over the span of just three weeks! Here is the official itch website with all the info, where you can watch the progress.
We held our first online Seattle Indies Showcase on May 21st, featuring six of the freshest turn-based tactics games from indie devs across the Pacific Northwest! If you missed it, you can watch it right here and don’t worry, there will be more!
Lastly, a new job search site called WorkWithIndies.com recently launched. If you’re looking for a position (both for a job or to post one), consider checking it out!
Upcoming Events
PocketGamer Connects is almost here, and we might still have some free tickets for indie devs, which you can apply for right here. If they’re out, you can buy a regular ticket here. The event is taking place June 8-12 with numerous live talks and panels, as well as tools for virtual matchmaking. So get your networking-hat on!
Seattle Indies Expo (SIX) has gone full digital as well, and applications are closing THIS Saturday (June 13)! So if you haven’t submitted your game, hurry up and do it here! What is SIX? It’s our annual (FREE) showcase of local game developers, which normally overlaps with PAX. This year, it will all be taking place online, and we’ll share more info about the setup as we get closer. Stay tuned! There is still time to sign up to be a juror and give feedback on submissions, do it now https://forms.gle/4i5y5uNf3T4hmWBa7
Join Seattle Indies on Tuesday June 16 for our monthly Social meetup on Zoom. Connect with your friends from wherever you are while we continue to practice social distancing.
On Wednesday June 17, we’ll also be hosting a digital Games Club session discussing Islanders. You can find all the info right here. What a book club is to discussion of literature, this event is to discussion of game design. Every month, we agree to play a game, then meet to discuss and analyze its design and presentation.
As we’ve mentioned before, GDC Summer will also be a digital-only conference this year, taking place Aug. 4-6. You can now register for it right here on the official website!
Lastly, we hosted our monthly Saturday Indie Support Group through Zoom twice now, and I think we’re getting a good hang of things! If you’re in dire need for some (virtual) social interaction, come join our Discord to participate this weekend!
Local Dev News
Bamboy just released a new build for Asteroidians, a multiplayer strategy platformer artillery game that follows in the footsteps of the acclaimed Worms: Armageddon. Asteroidians hopes to bring Worms: Armageddon to modern standards, as well as build upon the formula that made the original so great.
Jaiden Gerig also launched the Steam page for ArrowBall an Indie Sports game where you use explosive arrows and acrobatics to outmaneuver your opponents and control THE BALL on a variety of unique Stages. Engage in 1v1 or 2v2 local multiplayer battles, run, jump, slow time, build up your Super Bar, and unleash your Super Arrow!
Stay Safe & Game On
We’re still in the midst of dealing with the pandemic, so here’s some tips on how you can keep yourself safe:
- Keep your hands clean, and keep your distance from sick people
- Wear a face mask when going out
- Stock up on home supplies, medicine and resources
- Prepare your family, and communicate your plan
- With your children, keep calm and carry on — and get the flu shot
- About to go on vacation? Consider your destination and how you feel about risk
- Take a deep breath when thinking about the stock market
Lastly, if you are feeling bored or wanting to share unused game codes – we created a game key sharing Google Sheet that we can use to post our keys from past Humble Bundles, gift copies, cards, codes, whatever you may have around that you don’t intend to use or want to share with your fellow game developers to help keep spirits up while we’re all stuck inside for a bit.
As always, keep an eye on our Discord for any last-minute news and discussion, and let us know about any projects you’re working on that you’d like shared on our Steam or Itch collections or tweeted about from @SeattleIndies!
